Abstract
We conducted a review of the literature using a Medline search for the years 1980-2006. Our findings included literature reports of 2452 patients who received sinus lift grafts, which involved the placement of 7151 implants. As the membrane can be damaged by overfilling, infection, or perforation during a sinus lift operation, we evaluated the prognosis of sinus perforation of the maxillary sinus, a common complication of implant placement in the posterior maxilla. Through a review of the literature, we found no statistically significant difference in the cumulative survival rate between sinus perforated implants and non-perforated implants. The results indicated that a perforation of the maxillary sinus may not affect implant success in the posterior maxilla.
